Lluís Vidal

He was born in Barcelona where he studied music at the Municipal Superior Conservatory of Music. He founded the Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure (1985), of which he had been a member for eighteen years, developing an intense activity as a pianist, arranger, composer and artistic and musical director. He also founded the jazz groups Catalònia (1977), Onix (1983), Ictus (1987) and his own trio, as well as the tango group Araca (1995).

He participated in numerous radio and television programs and has given concerts all over the world: he performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Big Band of the Belgian RTV, the Orquestra Ciudad de Granada, the Beethoven Academie of Belgium, the National Orchestra of Spain and the Real Filharmonía de Galicia. In addition, he recorded more than twenty albums as a leader and many others as a collaborator.

As a composer, he received numerous commissions, among which the following stand out Diàlegs (2015), commissioned by the JONC, Concert for Brass Quintet and Orchestra (2010), commissioned by the group Spanish Brass Luur Metalls, La llegenda de Sant Jordi (2009), commissioned by the Cobla Sant Jordi, Iberia (2004), commissioned by the Orquestra Nacional de España, and Nueva york en un poeta (1997), commissioned by the Orquestra Ciudad de Granada. He has written music for cinema, theatre, and numerous other works for various ensembles.

He collaborated with jazz musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, John Abercrombie and Dave Liebman among others, as well as with classical musicians such as Josep Pons, Wlater Boykens and H.K. Gruber and with tango musicians Rodolfo Mederos, Horacio Ferrer and Pablo Mainetti.

He has taught at the AMMJ Taller de Músics (of which he was musical director for three years), and is currently a teacher of composition, ensemble, big band and piano within the department of jazz and modern music at ESMUC.

He has obtained several composition awards, among which we can highlight the prize in the Latin jazz composition contest organised by the SGAE. He also received the National Music Prize from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the prize from the Association of Jazz and Modern Music Musicians of Catalonia.
