Úrsula Pilar San Cristóbal

An audiovisual artist and researcher specialising in contemporary art and audio-visual culture, her video artwork has been screened at various festivals around the world. She has also given seminars on artistic research and interdisciplinary creation and is co-author of the book Investigación artística en música. Problemas, métodos, experiencias y modelos (Artistic Research in Music. Problems, Methods, Experiences, and Models).

Biography

Úrsula San Cristóbal holds a degree in Ancient Music Performance from the Scuola Civica di Musica di Milano (Italy), a master’s degree in Hispanic Music from the University of Valladolid and a master’s degree in Musicology from the University of Milan (Italy). She also holds a PhD in Art History and Musicology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where her thesis was on the role of sound and music in the video art and performance works of Marina Abramović and Shirin Neshat. Her research received the Special Doctorate Award in 2020.

During her career she has been invited to create video installations at the Festival International d’Arts Numériques Videoformes (Clermont-Ferrand, France) and has been artist-in-residence at Nau Estruch (Sabadell, Spain). Her video artwork has been shown internationally at festivals such as Les Instants Vidéo Festival (France), Magmart Video Under Vulcano (Italy), Bideodromo – International Experimental Film and Video Festival (Spain), Miami New Media Festival (USA), Videoformes (France), Traverse Vidéo (France), FILE – Electronic Language International Festival (Brazil), Video Art Miden (Greece), Media Art Biennale WRO 2021 (Poland) and Proyector Video Art Festival (Spain).

She has also given seminars on artistic research and interdisciplinary creation in different international institutions and is the co-author, together with Rubén López Canon, of the book Investigación artística en música. Problemas, métodos, experiencias y modelos (2014).

In the world of teaching, she has taught music in audiovisual media at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) and currently teaches aesthetics, communication and research methodology at Taller de Músics.
