More about Irene Reig

Her trio, with Pau Sala on double bass and Joan Casares on drums, have presented their own music at many renowned venues and festivals in recent years. Their first album, Mira (The Changes, 2021), won them the AMJM Emerging Talent Award and was a finalist at both the Premios Alícia awards and the Premios Enderrock awards.

Reig also leads her own septet: Irene Reig & The Bop Collective, a group playing original compositions and arrangements who have played at Jazz Cava de Terrassa, Jamboree, Bimhius Festival and Amersfoort Jazz Festival, among others. They released their first CD The Bop Collective (DiscMedi/Blau) in June 2018. That same year, the septet won the Public Prize at the prestigious Dutch Jazz Competition. In November 2023, they released Decisió i coratge (The Changes), an album that pivots between the jazz tradition and the hottest new music, and which marks a before and after in the band’s career.

Musical career

Irene’s interest in music began at a very early age, and at the age of 15 she entered the world of jazz as a saxophonist, joining the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, and later studying at ESMUC with teachers of the stature of Eladio Reinón, Gorka Benítez and Xavi Figuerola. Later, she moved to Amsterdam, where she settled to study a Master’s Degree in Performance under the tutelage of Ferdinand Povel.

Irene Reig has already enjoyed a long and successful career as a composer and saxophonist. Her first album as leader, Views (DiscMedi/Blau, 2017), was with a quintet (which included trumpeter and flugelhorn player John Swana) and comprised her own songs. It evokes memories of Barcelona, Amsterdam and Philadelphia, three cities where she has lived. Her next two albums were as leader of the septet The Bop Collective: the first bears the name of the band The Bop Collective (DiscMedi/Blau, 2018), and the second is entitled Iapsis (The Changes, 2019). Both present original songs and arrangements full of personality and freshness that confirm the band as a revelation on the national jazz scene.
