Llu\u00eds Cabrera explains when and how singer Rosal\u00eda studied at Taller de M\u00fasics\u2019 schools in Barcelona\u2019s Raval and Sant Andreu de Palomar neighbourhoods.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the Lux<\/em> tour now completed and having received the 2026 National Award for Contemporary Music (Premio Nacional de las M\u00fasicas Actuales)<\/strong>, Rosal\u00eda is once again at the centre of the music world\u2019s attention. In this context, I would like to clarify a few points about the Catalan artist, with one purpose in mind: to help shed light on the years Rosal\u00eda spent studying at Taller de M\u00fasics<\/strong>, as well as the productions, concerts, projects and activities in which she took part<\/strong> during her training.<\/p>\n

This historical account was necessary given the difficulties many media outlets face when trying to write about Rosal\u00eda\u2019s educational journey in Barcelona. The flood of information published by traditional and digital media outlets around the world contains both facts and inaccuracies.<\/p>\n

The two books published before the start of the Lux<\/em> tour in April 2026, Rosal\u00eda por ah\u00ed por Barcelona\u2026<\/em><\/strong> (Maricel Chavarr\u00eda, Libros de Vanguardia) and Buscando a Rosal\u00eda<\/em><\/strong> (Oriol Rodr\u00edguez and Yeray S. Iborra, Libros del Kultrum), provide a fairly accurate account of the artist\u2019s academic journey. However, they do not mention the stages, platforms and initiatives through which Rosal\u00eda began to make her way in the music world before <\/strong>Los \u00c1ngeles<\/strong><\/em>, her first album co-led with musician and producer Ra\u00fcl Fern\u00e1ndez Mir\u00f3, known as Refree<\/em>.<\/p>\n

When did Rosal\u00eda study at Taller de M\u00fasics?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rosal\u00eda Vila Tobella enrolled at Taller de M\u00fasics Music School in January 2010, at our premises in the Raval neighbourhood, a school we established in 1979. It was here that she met the person who would remain her flamenco singing teacher, Jos\u00e9 Miguel Vizcaya S\u00e1nchez, known as <\/strong>Chiqui de la L\u00ednea<\/strong><\/em> (La L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n, C\u00e1diz, 1951). Throughout 2010, 2011 and the first half of 2012, Rosal\u00eda studied a range of theoretical and practical subjects within the school\u2019s jazz and flamenco programmes.<\/p>\n

In June 2012, Rosal\u00eda passed the entrance examination for higher music studies with a very good mark at our centre in Barcelona\u2019s Sant Andreu district, in the Can Fabra building: Taller de M\u00fasics Higher School of Music (ESEM)<\/strong>. She completed her first year of higher studies during the 2012\u20132013 academic year and her second year during 2013\u20132014, following the curriculum established by the regulations of the Government of Catalonia and overseen by AQU (the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency). Throughout this period, her principal flamenco singing teacher continued to be Jos\u00e9 Miguel Vizcaya S\u00e1nchez, who at the time taught at both Taller de M\u00fasics ESEM and ESMUC (Escola Superior de M\u00fasica de Catalunya)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In September 2014, Rosal\u00eda Vila and another young cantaora<\/em>, Ana Casado, decided to request the transfer of their academic records from Taller de M\u00fasics ESEM to ESMUC<\/strong>, a process that was completed without any difficulty.<\/p>\n

One possible motivation for this change was that both students recognised two clear facts. On the one hand, Jos\u00e9 Miguel Vizcaya S\u00e1nchez taught the principal flamenco singing subject at both institutions. On the other, tuition fees were considerably lower at ESMUC, as it is a public educational institution funded by the Education Department of the Government of Catalonia.<\/p>\n

Both Taller de M\u00fasics Music School (Raval) and Taller de M\u00fasics ESEM (Sant Andreu) rely primarily on student tuition fees<\/strong>, since both institutions are run by a private, non-profit foundation. For the educational work carried out at these centres, Fundaci\u00f3 Privada Taller de M\u00fasics receives no subsidies from any public administration.<\/p>\n

At ESMUC, Rosal\u00eda completed the third and fourth years of her higher music studies, as well as her final degree project (TFT or TFG). This was a conceptual project based on the medieval Occitan novel <\/strong>Flamenca<\/strong><\/em>, also known as <\/strong>Roman de Flamenca<\/strong><\/em>, inspired by an idea from Andalusian artist Pedro G. Romero. That academic project evolved and eventually became the album El mal querer<\/em><\/strong> (2018).<\/p>\n

Taller de M\u00fasics ESEM and ESMUC hold the same academic status: both institutions offer higher music studies, and neither ranks above the other. When some media outlets claim that Rosal\u00eda studied \u201chigher music studies\u201d at ESMUC but only \u201cmusic studies\u201d at Taller de M\u00fasics, they convey an inaccurate picture<\/strong> of the academic reality.<\/p>\n

Which higher music schools are there in Barcelona?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Barcelona currently has five institutions offering higher music studies. All hold the same academic status, must meet the same requirements and are supervised by AQU: ESMUC (public), Taller de M\u00fasics ESEM, Conservatori del Liceu, SAE Creative Media Education and Jam Session<\/strong> (the latter four being private institutions). In Girona, the Government of Catalonia\u2019s Education Department has also recently authorised a new higher music institution, EUMES, Escola Superior de M\u00fasica Avan\u00e7ada i So<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rosal\u00eda\u2019s relationship with Taller de M\u00fasics\u2019 Management & Productions department<\/strong> dates back to the moment she first enrolled at our Raval school. This relationship continued throughout her time at Taller de M\u00fasics ESEM and remained in place while she completed her higher studies at ESMUC, until 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the classroom to the stage\u201d has been a guiding principle throughout Taller de M\u00fasics\u2019 history, dating back to its foundation in 1979. Without stages, performance platforms and a firm commitment to creating professional opportunities for young musicians \u2014regardless of whether they study at an unregulated arts school or a higher education institution\u2014, professionalisation is unlikely to succeed.<\/p>\n

In Rosal\u00eda\u2019s case, as in many others, this process of moving \u201cfrom the classroom to the stage\u201d worked with remarkable intensity.<\/strong> I believe that any educational approach in the arts can be valid. However, live performance should be a fundamental principle, especially when exceptional talent such as Rosal\u00eda\u2019s is identified.<\/p>\n

Any young student who chooses to join Taller de M\u00fasics, regardless of their level of study, and who demonstrates commitment to learning and sufficient aptitude, is registered with the Spanish Social Security system and paid the corresponding performance fee when hired by the Management & Productions department to perform on stage.<\/p>\n
