Biografía

From a young age, Rubén Luis was drawn to music and the guitar, which led him to take his first steps by joining various rock and blues bands on the island. His curiosity and desire to learn more drove him to begin his intermediate-level studies at the Conservatorio Profesional de Tenerife, specializing in electric guitar. During his formal education, he participated in various international jazz and modern music seminars in the Canary Islands with renowned musicians such as Chris Cheek, Joe Magnarelli, Dick Oatts, Jonathan Kreisberg, and Sylvain Luc, among others.

Later, he was awarded the Joves Promeses scholarship from the Fundació Ferrer Salat, prompting his move to Barcelona to pursue higher studies in modern music and jazz at the Conservatori del Liceu. He developed during this period under the guidance of Dani Pérez and Jordi Bonell.

During his advanced studies, he received instruction from musicians like Llibert Fortuny, David Xirgu, Ramon Prats, Ray Colom, Horacio Fumero, Albert Bover, and Giulia Valle. He also attended masterclasses with international musicians such as Gilad Hekselman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Maria Schneider, Chick Corea, Terence Blanchard, and Christian McBride.

In 2018, he released his debut album as a bandleader, Magara, with RL Project, which earned him the award for Best Emerging Artist at the 10th edition of the Canarias Jazz Showroom Festival. He is currently pursuing the Barcelona Jazz Master’s degree at ESMUC while working on the composition of his second album as a leader.

His teaching career spans more than ten years, during which he has trained musicians from various generations at different institutions in Catalonia and the Canary Islands, such as EM Tritò, EM Sant Gervasi, Escola Amadeus, Gymusic, Escola Municipal Montserrat Almirall, and the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Canarias. He is currently a faculty member at Taller de Músics.
