Lucas Martínez

Adjunct Professor

Born in Blanes, on the Mediterranean coast, Lucas Martínez grew up in a family of musicians and began playing the tenor saxophone at the age of eight.
He graduated from ESMUC (Barcelona) in 2016 and earned his Master’s degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2018.
He also studied in Graz (Austria) through the Erasmus program and in Philadelphia (USA) as part of a semester-long exchange.
These experiences broadened his musical vision and his ability to adapt to different cultures and styles.
In addition to his work as a performer, he has built a career as a composer, educator, and leader of several ensembles.

Biography

Lucas Martínez (Blanes, 1994) is a saxophonist and composer who has established himself as one of the most prominent voices of his generation within the European jazz scene. Active in both Spain and Mexico, he has performed in 27 countries, participated in over 50 recordings, and received several national and international awards. In 2025, he was recognized as Young Talent of the Year by the Association of Jazz and Modern Music Musicians of Catalonia (AMJM).

For Martínez, the saxophone is more than an instrument: it is a means of exploring emotions and human connection — a voice of courage to speak, be heard, and stand up for one’s convictions. His music combines lyricism and intensity, moving naturally between intimacy and openness. With four albums as a leader and two as a co-leader, he has built a distinctive sound while remaining an active and highly sought-after sideman in a variety of projects.

Driven by curiosity and dedication, Lucas sees music as a meeting point between people, cultures, and generations. His work is guided by the conviction that art must be a space for expression, struggle, respect, and shared learning.
