Escarteen Sisters

Two sisters, two voices, a cello and a viola. Escarteen Sisters create a distinctive sonic universe that moves between folk, jazz, classical music and pop, without fitting neatly into any one of these categories. In their compositions, the poetry of words is the starting point for a musical dialogue between voice and instrument, with both sisters singing and playing at the same time.

More about Escarteen Sisters

Laia and Flavia Escartin have been sharing the stage since childhood. Their music grows out of the intimate connection between them and an identity shaped by their Catalan-Mexican-Belgian family background. They sing in the four languages spoken at home, especially Catalan, combining original lyrics with folk-inspired melodies, African rhythms, jazz harmonies and chamber music textures.

Throughout their career, they have collaborated with artists such as Silvia Pérez Cruz, Yamandú Costa, Kudsi Ergüner, Casey Driessen and Nathalie Haas, among others. Their work has received recognition at several competitions: in 2023, they won the awards for Best Arrangement and Best Performance at the Andrea Parodi competition, and in 2018 they received first prize at the Acoustic Music Barcelona Awards.

Since 2015, Escarteen Sisters have performed across Europe and the Middle East, bringing languages such as Catalan and Dutch to audiences in different cultural contexts. In 2027, they will present Pedra i Ploma, a new album featuring ten original compositions that explore the tension between weight and lightness, from their physical dimension to their deeper philosophical meaning.

Laia Escartin, on viola and vocals, studied jazz singing at the Conservatori del Liceu and Turkish viola at Codarts in Rotterdam. Flavia Escartin, on cello and vocals, graduated in classical music from Codarts and in jazz cello from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Together, they have developed a musical language that combines experimentation, poetic sensitivity and an exploration of their cultural roots.
