Barencia is an imaginary city, a symbolic midpoint between Barcelona and Florence. It represents a unique fusion of traditions — a sonic alchemy that brings to life an encounter between flamenco and jazz. Their new album, Barencia (The Changes, 2025), invites listeners to journey through this symbolic territory where each melody connects distinct cultures. Conceived as a musical voyage, the album turns each track into a stop filled with emotion, symbolism, and shared roots.
Barencia is a compact group: Xavi Torres, one of the most promising Catalan pianists in European jazz, joins the Florentine drummer Bernardo Guerra, known for his ongoing collaborations with Stefano Bollani, and the young double bass player Michelangelo Scandroglio, an emerging talent on the Italian scene. The compositions of the leaders, Torres and Scandroglio, seem to draw in the dancing of Karen Lugo. Hailing from Mexico, Karen is a brave, creative and original dancer, and she has won awards for her innovative research into flamenco. What’s more, her background in contemporary dance is taking the group to new horizons.

NEW ALBUM: BARENCIA (The Changes, 2025)
The album Barencia outlines a sonic journey from Barcelona to Florence, with each song representing a stage along the way. The track sequence serves as an emotional map, where each stop evokes places, sensations, and encounters between two worlds. The compositions, imagined as soundscapes, explore the bond between rhythm, body, and voice — serving as a bridge between diverse musical languages.
Barencia —the band— takes on the role of storyteller, weaving a narrative of cultural connection through music. In this passage between cities, the listener embarks on a sensory journey that celebrates the richness of artistic cross-pollination.
