Ana Brenes

Singer, composer, and educator Ana Brenes is a prominent voice in the Catalan flamenco scene. In 2019, she was named Flamenca of the Year by the flamenco associations of Catalonia.

Born in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Barcelona, into a flamenco-rooted family, she has been singing for as long as she can remember, drawing inspiration from her parents: her mother, a cantaora from Extremadura, and her father, a flamenco aficionado from Utrera. She began her training as a self-taught artist and later graduated in Flamenco Singing from ESMUC. She currently teaches at ESMUC and at Taller de Músics.

Biografía

Ana blends traditional flamenco with contemporary experimentation. She is a member of Laboratoria, a feminist and multidisciplinary performance collective, and is the singer and composer of La Prenda Roja, a project that merges flamenco with electronic music and innovation. She collaborates with Albert Pla in RumbaGenarios and performs as cantaora in guitarist Chicuelo’s Gran Gala, a weekly show at the Palau de la Música Catalana, alongside artists like La Tana and Karime Amaya. Her work has taken her to countries such as the UK, France, Morocco, Russia, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia.

She is a regular performer in Federico García, a theatre production by Pep Tosar, and is part of FlamencoQueer. She has also performed in José Manuel Álvarez’s Bailes Colaterales, and at major festivals including Flamencón, La Noche de Cante Jondo de Cerdanyola, the Granada Festival, Ciutat Flamenco, Voll-Damm Barcelona Jazz Festival, La Mercè, Jaén Auténtica flamenco nights, El Dorado Sociedad Flamenca Barcelonesa, Flamenco Béziers Festival in France, and El Grec, among others.

She is the voice behind the soundtrack of Marta Romero’s documentary Toda una vida, and appears in Laura Ferrés’ feature film La Imatge Permanent (Goya-nominated). Alongside DJ Mëstiza, she released two singles: El Pañuelo and Origen, the latter featured in the 2023 campaign for Aguas Lanjarón. That same year, she opened the Premi d’Honor de les Lletres Catalanes gala at the Palau de la Música, sharing the stage with Jordi Savall and Xavier Díaz-Latorre.

In 2021, she premiered Camino, her first solo show of original compositions, where she explores sound, visual language, and theatricality from within the flamenco tradition. She is currently working on her debut album based on this project.
