Apel·les Carod

He started playing the violin at the age of 8 at the Municipal School of Music in Cambrils. At the age of 15, he abandoned his classical music studies and began to explore the electric guitar. Then, at eighteen Apel·les Carod resumed his academic studies of music, yet focussing on jazz and modern music, until he graduated in jazz violin and modern guitar at the Aula de Música Moderna i Jazz del Conservatori del Liceu in 2010.

Biography

From 2010 to 2015 he studied at the ESMUC, becoming the first graduate in the speciality of jazz violin in Spain, receiving classes from teachers such as Lluís Vidal, Gorka Benítez, David Xirgu, Dani Pérez, Agustín Fernández, Joan Monné or Oriol Saña. In 2013 Apel-les Carod studied at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice (Poland) thanks to an Erasmus scholarship.

Between 2015 and 2016 he lived in New York, where he furthered his studies at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music thanks to a scholarship granted by this same institution. There he took lessons from Christian Howes, Vic Juris, Rachel Z Hakim, Dave Glasser and Rory Stuart. In addition, he has participated in workshops and masterclasses with musicians such as Didier Lockwood, Paul Giger, Barry Harris and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Apel·les Carod was awarded with the second prize in the International Zbigniew Seifert Jazz Violin Competition twice, namely in the first two editions of this event held in Krakow (Poland) in 2014 and 2016.

He has led his own ensembles (Apel-les Carod Trio, Quartet, Septet), and has played or collaborated with groups and artists of different styles such as Txarango, Raynald Colom, Els Pets, David Mauricio, Taulant Mehmeti, Stanislaw Slowinski, Pawel Kaczmarczyk, A Strings Affair, Eclectic Colour Orchestra, Esmuc Jazz Project, Aupa Quartet, Albert Bello, Lecirke or Roger Benet, among others.

He performed his music in festivals and halls of reference in Catalonia such as the Jamboree Jazz Club, the Palau de la Música, L’Auditori in Barcelona, the Sunset Jazz Club, the International Dixieland Festival in Tarragona or the Terrassa Jazz Festival, but also outside the country, such as the Summer Jazz Festival in Krakow, Festival Jazz z Wami, Vertigo Jazz Club, 12on14 Jazz Club (Poland) or the Silvana Club in New York (USA).
