Marc Ayza

Born in Barcelona in 1976, he started playing the drums during his high school years with the group Wargasm, while simultaneously training at the Taller de Músics (combos) and at the Luthier school (solfeggio, in concert with the Conservatori del Bruc). He studied drums with the masters Quim Solé, Jorge Rossy, Peer Wyboris and Pau Bombardó, and harmony with Lluís Vergés. He also received masterclasses by musicians such as Bob Moses, Leon Parker, Seamus Blake, Chris Cheek, Chano Dominguez and Perico Sambeat, among others. In 2001 he received a scholarship from the Generalitat de Catalunya to study in New York with Eric McPherson and Nasheet Waits. In the same city, he has taken master classes with Brian Blade.

Biography

He has worked with artists such as Perico Sambeat (member of Perico Sambeat Sextet for five years), Raynald Colom (collaboration still in progress), Javier Colina, Aruan Ortiz, Sheila Jordan, Steve Kuhn, Greg Osby, Wallace Roney, Antoine Roney, Esperanza Spalding, Jason Lindner, Antonio Hart, Jesse Davis, Mulgrew Miller, Seamus Blake, Blurum13, Baba Israel, Illspokin, Core Rhythm and a long list of national and international musicians from both Jazz and Hip Hop scenes. He also leads his own projects, such as Marc Ayza Group, Marc Ayza Trio, Beat’a’Boom (with Dj Helios) or BUM Collective.

As a teacher, he has taught at the Aula (1995), Musicaactiva (1997-2002), Escola de Música Farré (2003-2006) and Taller de Premià (2004-2008). He has also given master classes at the Seminario de Jazz de Pontevedra, Escuela de Música de Vallecas (ESMUVA), Belgrade Jazz Festival, Birmingham Conservatory and the Savassi Festival in Brazil.
