Marta Casals

Marta Casals holds a PhD in Sociology (Cum Laude – International Mention) from the University of Barcelona, an MA in Cultural Management (UOC-UdG) and an MA in Humanities: art, literature and contemporary culture (UOC). She also holds a degree in Music Education (UAB). Her main areas of research are artistic professions, gender and culture, music and education, among others. In 2016, she was visiting doctoral student in the Music Business Department at Berklee College of Music, Boston (United States).

 

Biography

In the musical field, she is the composer, performer and producer of the musical kids show Maila, un món de contes a través de la música, with which she has performed in stages around Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Andorra, Uruguay and Argentina. She published the show’s first album in 2014 and its Spanish version in 2016. She currently co-directs Sonall, música per a nadons, with Gemma Rafecas. In 2018, they released the homonymous album and in 2019, the musical-theatrical show La nostra amiga Girafa. Since 2015, she performs traditional Catalan songs with guitarist Dani Jané. Since 2006, she has been part of musical groups of soul, funk, pop and rumba as keyboardist, accordionist and singer. Since 2005, she has worked as a music teacher in different schools in Barcelona.

She is currently a professor at the University of Barcelona, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya. She is the coordinator of the Master in Musical Management and Production of the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya. She is a researcher at the Centre of Research in Information, Communication and Culture (CRICC), University of Barcelona.
