Raquel García-Tomás is a composer specialising in interdisciplinary creation who holds a PhD from the Royal College of Music in London. Among her most outstanding projects are joint creations with the English National Ballet, the Royal British Society of Sculptors, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Dresdener Musikfestspiele. In the 2015/16 season, she was a guest composer at the Sampler Sèries de L’Auditori contemporary music festival in Barcelona, and in 2017 she was awarded the El Ojo Crítico de Música Clásica Prize, granted by RTVE, “for the originality of her approaches and for the use and combination of compositional language with technological and audiovisual languages”.
Throughout her career, Raquel García-Tomás’ music has been premiered at the Palau de la Música Catalana, L’Auditori, Teatre Lliure, CCCB, Fundació Tàpies, Fabra i Coats – Fàbrica de Creació, Arts Santa Mònica, Es Baluard Museum in Palma de Mallorca, Auditorio de Zaragoza, La Casa Encendida and Auditorio 440 – Museo Reina Sofía. Internationally, his works have been performed in Berlin, Dresden, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Vienna, Orléans, Lyon, Basel, Lausanne, Porto, Edinburgh, Nagoya, Cairo, Rosario, Buenos Aires and especially in London (St. Martin in the Fields, Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall, National Portrait Gallery, Royal British Society of Sculptor, Royal Academy of Arts and The Place).
Raquel García-Tomás received commissions and worked with ensembles such as Oslo Sinfonietta, Phace Ensemble, Experimental Funktion Ensemble, CrossingLines Ensemble, Barcelona Clarinet Players, BCN216, PluralEnsemble, Barcelona Reed Quintet, Taller Sonoro, Taller Atlántico Contemporáneo and Variable Geometry Ensemble, among others.
Within the framework of operatic creation, she has worked on DIDO Reloaded, produced by Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació, and has been awarded the Berliner Opernpreis’14 by the Neuköllner Oper Berlin thanks to the project go, ÆNEAS, go! She also collaborated as a composer and video creator with the Berlin stage director Matthias Rebstock in the creation of Buro für postidentisches Leben, which premiered at the GREC Festival and at the Neuköllner Oper in Berlin. In 2015 she premiered disPLACE – Història d’una casa at the Vienna festival MusikTheaterTage Wien, an opera that had been reinterpreted at the Arts Santa Mónica and within the programme of the Teatro Real in Madrid during the 2016/17 season, in the Sala Negra of the Teatros del Canal. She teaches in the speciality of Composition at the Taller de Músics Escuela Superior de Estudios Musicales.
