Youth School

  • It is an educational project designed for youth between the ages of 12 and 17, which aims to develop artistic and intellectual abilities through musical practice and improvisation in the field of jazz and modern music.

From the experience of a pioneering school in the practice of improvised music and with the application of innovations that were proved most valuable and positive in the field of music education, the Taller de Músics offers a curriculum that orbits around the development of students’ abilities, the practice of games and musical learning.

Taller de Músics: Youth School

YOUTH SCHOOL

Musical Learning through Jazz and Modern Music

The Escola Jove is characterised by the involvement of students and teachers in the construction of learning, socialisation and playfulness in order to develop one of the most important requirements in any educational project: motivation. Likewise, the teachers work as a team while putting the student in the centre of the objective. The curriculum is structured around the instrumental ensemble and is complemented by a personalised signature instrument or voice and a musical language consisting of two components: Rhythms and Projects.

SYLLABUS

The plan consists of four academic years. Students who have already been to other music schools will be tested for their level in each subject. The continuity of this plan, in case this is the student’s wish, is guaranteed by the connection of the student with the musical professionalisation plan (performer or composer), the Free Program of the Taller de Músics or the COS, the program of preparation to the Bachelor of music in its modalities of Performance, Music Pedagogy or Composition.

In this study plan, the subjects are connected, so that each one of them becomes an essential part of the musical education of the student. The objectives of the plan have to do with the development of musical capacities, audacity and the artistic expression by means of musical learning. Likewise, all teachers that participate in the plan work together, being fully aware that they are intervening in a part of the student’s education.

Subjects

Each of the subjects forms part of the learning process coordinated with other parts. There are three core subjects:

Instrumental Set
The students of each combo propose a part of the musical repertoire to be worked on during the course. The other part consists of didactic material, specifically designed for this project and adapted to each student’s level.

Instrument/Voice
Conceived as a continuation of the work done in the instrumental ensemble, it addresses the more technical issues of the instrument in applying the theory to improvisation or reading.  The teachers of Instrumento work in a team with the teachers of Conjunto Instrumental and collegially decide upon tutorial actions for better functioning and use of the student.

Musical Language
The musical language is done in small groups and is articulated in two parts: rhythmics and projects. Both provide a creative framework for learning and assimilation of concepts for musical practice.
Rhythmics: The learning is done through a percussion group. While enjoying the practice of collective percussion, one learns and practices reading and rhythmic precision that will help develop the musicality of the rhythm and the understanding of its patterns.
Projects: The teacher encourages, motivates and leads the students to develop a musical project at their disposal through which they will learn the practical concepts of musical language and harmony.

Simultaneity of studies

The design of the Escuela Joven del Taller de Músics takes into account the simultaneity of studies with the ESO or the Bachillerato. In this way, the student’s participation in the Music School will not interfere with their performance in their compulsory studies. Furthermore, as a School Authorised by the Department of Education, these studies can replace optional ESO and baccalaureate subjects by means of corresponding validations.

Timetables: All classes at the Escuela Joven take place between 6 pm and 8 pm.

Continuity of studies: Once the Escola Jove Programme has been completed, students can continue their musical studies by taking a guaranteed jump in both the Escola’s Lliure Programme and the Higher Studies Orientation Course (COS).
