Lluc Casares Septet was conceived in 2018 when Lluc was in his second year of the Artist Diploma program at The Juilliard School (New York) under the tutelage of Wynton Marsalis and Kenny Washington. The septet materialized when he set foot back in his hometown, Barcelona. There he gathered together some of his friends, all of them outstanding musicians from the scene, and began to write original music and arrangements of little-known works in order to perform them monthly at the 23 Robadors music venue.
The project quickly took off and other gigs came along on top of the monthly gigs at Robadors. Thus, in November 2019, an American version of the septet had the opportunity to perform at Dizzy’s Club in New York. Before the world stopped in March 2020, Lluc Casares Septet already had performances scheduled at three festivals in Catalonia, as well as in Italy and London.
The septet’s music is fresh and new, sophisticated yet foot-tapping, and the quality of the soloists keeps audiences rivetted. Their inspirations are diverse, but you can hear echoes of Duke Ellington and Herbie Hancock, as well as Wynton Marsalis’ septet from the 90s. Lluc is a prolific arranger and composer, so the band’s repertoire is frequently renewed.
Sketches Overseas (Outside in Music, 2018) is Casares’ latest album as leader. Recorded in New York, it won Enderrock magazine’s Best Jazz Album award. His first album as a leader, RED (Temps Records, 2015) led to him playing under his own name on the most important stages in Amsterdam and Barcelona. He has recorded more than 20 albums as a sideman and has played at some of the most important festivals in Europe, such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Marciac Jazz Festival, Jazz Middelheim, Baloise Session, and the Terrassa Jazz Festival, among others. He has also performed at clubs such as Dizzy’s Club, Coca Cola, and Fat Cat in New York, the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, Jamboree in Barcelona and the Jazz at Lincoln Center in Shanghai.
