Joan Solà-Morales

Joan began his studies of electric bass, language and combo at the School of Modern Music and Jazz in Girona and at the Taller de Músics. Later, he started teaching electric bass with Manel Vega and double bass with Conrad Lluch and combo at the Taller de Músics in Barcelona.

Biography

He continued his training at the Amsterdam Conservatory where he obtained the Certificate of Higher Professional Education for the electric bass and double bass as second instrument (validated higher degree).

After his stay in Amsterdam, he took lessons in double bass with Arnald Panwow, Savio de la Corte and David Mengual, as well as in improvisation combo. He also obtained a master’s degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education and High School, Vocational Training and Language Teaching, with Music as a speciality.

Since 2013, he followed the continuous training course of the ESMUC “Application of Carnatic Rhythmic Techniques in Western Music” given by Rafael Reina. He also attended masterclasses with Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Avishai Cohen, Christian McBride, Bill Stewart, Jimmy Haslip, Victor Bailey, Michel Hatzigeorgiou, Carles Benavent, Mike Stern and Randy Brecker.

He has been in several formations such as Luis González Trío (6 cd) for which he collaborated with Gilad Hekselman, Gorka Benítez, Vicente Macian, Gianni Gagliardi and Lucas Martínez, a trio also resident at the Sunset Jazz Club in Girona for four seasons. With Dani Molina Quartet (2 cd), Straight no Trio, Tati Cervià, Girona Jazz Project and Pirri Jazz Band. He played and recorded with La Selva Big Band (3 cd) and with blues figures Billy Boy Arnold and Angela Brown.

In another record, he played with Umpah-pah (6 cd), Cris Juanico (2cd), Halldor Mar, Tófol Martínez La Banda del Surdo (1 cd), Astun Kiki, Freegees (1cd), Moya Kalongo, Litus (2 cd), Savater (1 cd), The Zeeman effective, composed music and participated in the show of the poet Roger Costa-Pau Cavada Pell.

Moreover, he has been a teacher of electric bass and double bass at the Taller de Músics in Barcelona, of electric bass at the Diaula music school, of electric bass and combo at the Musica & Co school in Barcelona and a substitution teacher of electric bass at the Escola Municipal de Música in Abrera, as well as of electric bass and combo at the Escola Vive la Música in Cardedeu.
