Jordi Castellà

Composition and Songwriting Coordinator at the Music School

He began his musical training in his hometown, Cervera, where he specialized in cello at the city’s Professional Conservatory of Music. Self-taught in his training of modern music and in the practice of various instruments such as the electric bass and the classical and electric guitar. He studied composition, cello and piano with maestro Gheorghe Motatu and completed his Higher Studies in composition at the Liceu Music School with maestro Benet Casablancas, together with professors such as Ramon Humet, Benjamin Davies, Gerassim Voronkov and Francesc Prat, among others.

Biography

Chamber and symphonic music composer and cellist linked to the field of musical pedagogy, he has been recognized with the 1st prize in the 3rd edition of the Ziryab de Balaguer literary and musical composition awards for his didactic work De Gerb a Balaguer. In 2014, the Picasso Museum selected his work Davant de Margot, inspired by the painting The Waiting (Margot) by Picasso, to be performed before the original painting, within the project Musicant Picasso. In 2013, the quartet UNTREF from Venezuela premiered their first Quartet de corda at the Conservatory of the Liceo in Barcelona. The contemporary music chamber group of the Liceu Conservatory has premiered the works Utopia, Entrando en la Catedral (finalist of the Cees Nooteboom competition, based on an excerpt from the book Desvío a Santiago by C. Nooteboom) and Pyrénées (2011, 2012 and 2014 respectively). In 2012 he premiered the work Escenes d’un conte medieval at the Penyafort-Montserrat Hall of Residence in Barcelona for traditional instruments in chamber music format.

He combines his activity as a composer with teaching and playing the electric bass and the guitar in different modern music ensembles. He is currently a guitarist in the group La Cruz de mi Vecino.

As a teacher, he has worked with groups of all ages and as a teacher in very diverse fields, such as sensory education, language, musical computing, cello, jazz combo or chamber ensemble. He began working as a language and chamber music teacher at the E.M.M. in Agramunt. Currently, he combines his work as a classical harmony teacher in the Taller de Músics with that of a language, chamber music and sensory education teacher at the E.M.M. J.M Llorenç i Cisteró de Guissona.
