ESEM Large Ensembles

The Taller de Músics ESEM offers its students the opportunity to participate in various medium and large ensembles, in which they can perform all a very varied repertoire, from jazz to the most up-to-date modern music.

By doing so, the Taller de Músics ESEM creates different spaces where future artists can develop their musical skills in a professional context and thereby achieving our school’s main purpose: accompanying the student from the classroom to the stage.

Taller de Músics ESEM Big Band

LLUC CASARES

The Taller de Músics ESEM Big Band was created with the aim of assembling a big band that works with both established and contemporary repertoire and encourages students to become familiar with this fundamental jazz tradition. Taller de Músics XXL Collective

DIRECTED BY
JAUME GISPERT

Taller de Músics XXL Collective was established in 2022 as a large-format modern music ensemble dedicated to performing contemporary and modern repertoires. The pieces they perform are specifically arranged for this ensemble, with compositions created exclusively to match its unique configuration and sound characteristics.

Each year, director Jaume Gispert selects a new repertoire, which is developed by arrangers trained at our institution. This selection aims to maintain strong connections within the Taller de Músics community, fostering collaboration and synergy among all those who are, or have been, part of this musical universe.

The Ensemble Vocal is made up of twenty-two voices that perform songs of modern music, jazz and traditional music from around the world. The aim of this large group is to have a singing group of these characteristics that can perform songs by authors from all over the world, but also to create its own music library with arrangements made specifically for a vocal ensemble.

A current repertoire of pieces in four or more voices will be worked on weekly, as well as own repertoire arranged to adapt it to the ensemble. The artists featured are: Säje, Gema 4, Sexto Sentido, Tiny Habits or Jacob Collier.

The Ensemble Vocal gives the participants, and the audience, the opportunity to enjoy the power of a vocal group that can only be found in this type of ensemble.

Supersax

DIRECTED BY
VÍCTOR DE DIEGO

Supersax was a jazz group founded in 1972 by saxophonist Med Flory and bassist Buddy Clark as a tribute to the iconic bebop saxophonist Charlie Parker. The group’s music consisted of harmonised arrangements of Charlie Parker improvisations, played by a sax section (2 altos, 2 tenors and a baritone), a rhythm section (bass, piano and drums) and a wind instrument (trombone or trumpet) which usually played lead.

Inspired by him, the Taller de Músics ESEM’s Supersax combo was born with the aim of taking the saxophone section to a new level with arrangements from other ESEM ensembles. In the Supersax combo, we work on the musical and technical foundations of how to play in a wind section and special emphasis is given to saxophone solos. Pianists, bassists, drummers and trumpet players can also participate.

Victor de Diego has a great deal of experience in this type of format, as he has been part of many big bands, many of them as lead alto.

Superstrings

DIRECTED BY
JAIME DEL BLANCO

The Superstrings combo is the result of adapting the idea of Med Flory’s Supersax group to an ensemble of string instruments. It is a space where the language and articulation of jazz and contemporary music is developed for violin, viola and cello. Members work on harmonisations of iconic solos from the jazz catalogue through arrangements of current pieces, as well as different accompaniment techniques for bowed string instruments.

Chano LAB

DIRECTED BY
CHANO DOMÍNGUEZ

The pianist Chano Domínguez is one of the most celebrated jazz musicians of his generation. He has achieved an unconventional integration between the rhythms and languages of jazz and flamenco. He plays tangos, tanguillos, alegrías, compás de bulerías, fandangos and soleás on piano, but with a traditional jazz structure. Today, Chano Domínguez is one of the most sought-after musicians on the Spanish music scene in any musical genre. In 2020 he won the Premio Nacional de las Músicas Actuales (National Prize for Contemporary Music).

Working in artistic residency with Chano Domínguez is a unique experience for all young musicians interested in both jazz and flamenco and the dialogue between them. The pianist’s own repertoire will be developed with newly created arrangements.
