Music Pedagogy

The future of musical education will be charted by teachers who are capable of showing music as an art that provides profound concepts and tools for the education and development of individuals. Musical learning, if it does not wish to fall into the trap of superficial and empty practice, must have at its disposal the actual elements that bring about autonomy, creativity and fluidity in the practice of music. And this learning has to be fostered in a framework of integration and cross-pollination between different trends and musical sensibilities.

It is for this reason that a teacher of music must also be a musician and enjoy the practice of music, as well as having a sound pedagogical training which enables them to carry out their task on any type of educational environment. At Taller de Músics ESEM therefore, with its speciality in Music Pedagogy we train students to become musicians capable of carrying out the practice of music. Aspects such as didactics, pedagogy, and centre management are also covered.

The Taller de Músics is, among other things, the music school with most experience in the jazz and modern music area, and more generally in the area of improvised and creative music. This institution has a long pedagogical history, which since 1979 has been the learning framework for the majority of the country's musicians in the aforementioned spheres, and it is rightly therefore an icon of musical education.

Likewise, the commitment of Taller de Músics to innovation in music education in Catalonia results in collaborations with professionals and reference organizations that have successfully developed alternatives to the old methods. The result of these collaborations benefits the students of this specialty, obtaining an accurate picture of the work of the more relevant music pedagogues as Edgar Willems, Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, Zoltán Kodály and Carl Orff, and of those who have developed their philosophies. Thus, Escola de Música Joan Llongueres (Dalcroze), Aula de So de Sant Cugat (Kodály) o Musicant (Willems), among others, teach specific sessions as part of the training of these students.

The speciality in Music Pedagogy is born out of the Taller de Músics' music schools and its collaborating schools, as well as from the Social Projects Area. Accordingly, the Taller de Músics group offers a wide and well-designed framework for the development of the practices associated with all of the didactic pedagogical and centre organisation subjects. Furthermore, this environment naturally becomes the starting point for the professional and occupational development of the graduates in this speciality.
